Overview

An arm lift (brachioplasty) removes loose skin from the upper arm area. Excess skin or “bat wings” can appear after a significant weight loss or due to aging and sun exposure. Frisco, Plano, & Allen TX plastic surgeon, Dr. Robert Najera, performs arm lift surgery to remove unwanted, hanging skin from the upper arms and re-contours the remaining skin to reveal tighter, younger looking upper arms. If fat deposits also exist in the upper arm area, liposuction can be combined with the arm lift for the best results. Patients should be at a stable, healthy weight before and after the procedure for a lasting effect.

Best Candidates

Excess skin on the upper arm can affect men and women for various reasons. It is usually caused by a large amount of weight loss, and even though the pounds are gone, the skin is not able to shrink to a smaller size. Natural aging and gravity can also loosen skin tone over time. Patients who are at or near their healthy, stable weight will get the best results from an arm lift. The arm lift will remove unwanted skin and re-shape the arm for a toned appearance that look great in fitted and sleeveless shirts. Dr. Najera will discuss what results each individual can expect during the initial consultation.

What to Expect

An arm lift is usually performed as an outpatient surgery in 1-2 hours under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The length of the incision will vary based on the amount of excess skin to be removed. Dr. Najera will trim away any existing loose skin, remove unwanted pockets of fat, and once the desired contour has been achieved, he will carefully suture the remaining skin back together. Dr. Najera takes great care to make the incision in the least visible part of the arm, but a scar will be left by the surgery. The scar will fade over time if the patient follows proper care instructions, including minimal sun exposure.

Brachioplasty Recovery

After the arm lift procedure, most patients will be able to leave the same day. Patients should expect temporary swelling, bruising, and some pain for 1-2 weeks after the surgery. To promote circulation and healing, arms should be kept elevated as much as possible. The hands and arms will be weak at first, but strength should return and allow careful use after 1-2 weeks. Weight training and exercise can be done 4-6 weeks after surgery. Patients can expect to see final results after 3 months. Results will be permanent as long as a healthy weight is maintained.

Expected Cost

An arm lift usually costs from $5,000 to $6,500. If an arm lift is combined with another procedure, like liposuction, the cost will increase.
