Overview

A mini tummy tuck is a good option for patients who have problems in their lower abdomen, such as loose skin that cannot be improved by diet and exercise. This is a less invasive approach to a full tummy tuck, which requires a longer incision. Many people agonize over the lower stomach “pooch” that prevents tight and toned abs. Dr. Najera, a plastic surgeon serving Frisco, TX, (and surrounding areas, Plano, Allen, McKinney) performs a mini tummy tuck by making a smaller incision to tighten loose skin and create a more toned appearance. For best results, candidates will have loose skin in their lower abdomen, but overall good skin tone and elasticity.

Surgical Technique

An abdominoplasty and a mini tummy tuck use similar techniques, but the mini tummy tuck will use a smaller incision and treat a smaller area. After the incision is made, excess skin is removed and liposuction is performed, if needed. Then, the skin and tissue are pulled together tightly and sewn together. Since this surgery concentrates on the lower stomach, the belly button is not usually affected and will not need to be adjusted. The small incision will leave a scar, but if post-operative scar care instructions are followed, the scar will fade nicely and will be easily hidden under clothing.

During/After Surgery

Dr. Najera performs all abdominoplasties, including mini tummy tucks, in an accredited surgical facility, usually as an outpatient procedure. Patients are placed under general anesthesia and the procedure generally takes between 1-2 hours. Patients should plan to spend 6 weeks recovering after their procedure before exercise and strenuous activity are allowed. The results of a mini tummy tuck will be permanent if a healthy weight is maintained after the procedure. Significant weight gain or pregnancy will negatively impact the final results of a mini tummy tuck.

Mini Tummy Tuck FAQs

Just Lipo?

A mini tummy tuck only addresses loose skin. Liposuction may be added to the procedure or done separately to remove fat. During your consultation, Dr. Najera will discuss whether liposuction will be needed to give your tummy tuck the best results.

Previous C-Section?

A C-section scar will not interfere with the procedure or final results. The tummy tuck incision is usually made slightly below the C-section scar and when the skin is sutured back together, the C-section scar and abdominoplasty incision becomes one scar. As long as post-operative instructions are followed carefully, the new scar should heal well and be easily disguised or hidden.

Children Post Surgery?

For the best results, Dr. Najera recommends that any type of abdominoplasty be performed after the patient is no longer planning to be pregnant. A tummy tuck tightens the abdominal muscles and a pregnancy after the procedure will stretch the skin and could alter the results.
